An invitational exhibit of artists who have participated in The Critique, as quasi monthly series produced by Otis Street Arts Project

On Saturday April 2, Otis Street Arts Project, a studio center and gallery in the Gateway Arts District of Mount Rainier, MD,  will be celebrating their one year anniversary with a special exhibit and afterparty. 

The evening will begin with a reception for the opening of The Critiqued, an exhibittion of 13 artists who have participated in The Critique, a quasi-monthly series produced by Otis Street Arts Project. The Critique is a formal critical discussion of invited artists led by a DC area arts professional. Guest critics have included F. Lennox Campello, Adah Rose Bitterbaum, Michael O’Sullivan and Dr. Claudia Rousseau. For this exhibit, the Artists will each be showing one piece each that reflects the conversations pertaining to their works. This special exhibit illustrates the growing arts community and inclusiveness of the Gateway Arts District and Otis Street Arts Project’s community building. 

The night will continue with a dance party featuring DJ New spinning an ecletic mix from Go-Go to 

New Orleans Brass Bands to House grooves. 

Otis Street Arts Project has had an exciting year of events, exhibtions and art making. Founded in Spring of 2015, they have opened their doors to tour groups, student groups, bands, DJ’s, art critics, gallarists, artists, art collectors, and the general public. Their resident artists have exhibited in international exhibits, national art fairs in Chicago, Miami, and New York, and widely in DC area galleries and art centers. For their one year anniversary, they are once again throwing open their doors to the public for a fantastic evening of Visual Art, Performance Art, and Music.

When viewing Joseph Shetler’s drawings and Jay Hendrick’s paintings, complex simplicity comes to mind; two opposing concepts intertwined into a unifying force. It is accomplished through tedious labor and dedication to their respective mediums.

Joseph Shetler draws inspiration and general philosophy from his Mennonite background. He was raised to reject all things that create chaos through keeping life simple and minimal. He carries this simplicity through his work and life. One gets lost in meditation through the peace and tranquility of his work. Simplicity cannot exist without complexity. Joseph’s work is created through thousands of lines that might otherwise create disorder, yet through meticulous labor they are organized into a spiritual simplicity.

While Joseph strives to reject chaos, Jay Hendrick seems to embrace it. He sees the world as chaotic and diverse and through paint he mashes layers into unified paintings. He questions the meaning of value through the use of multiples, and putting paintings through microscopy, digitization, and erasure. He uses grids as a stabilizing force and color as a representation of cultures. It is easy to be mesmerized by his mazes and ability to mesh colors, patterns, and ideas into a unified cohesive body of work.

While very different, both artist are masters of their medium. They manage to weave this chaotic universe into simplicity.

Otis Street Arts Project serves as artist studios and a creative incubator for those interested in a dynamic, supportive, and community oriented work environment of professional artists. Situated among other group studios in a light industrial space, including a glass studio, ceramics studios, painters and public artists. We aim to create an active space open to visitors, guest artists, collaborations, critiques, interactions, and other events. The space consists of subdivided empty studio areas roughly 11' x 11' with 9.5' ceilings and concrete floors. There is a bathroom, community area, flex space, kitchenette, utility sink, and exhibition space to showcase rotating exhibitions. The studio has a loading dock and parking. 

It is located in Mount Rainier, MD, just over the DC line.

Studios are $415/month each 
Utilities, WiFi, and Access to select events and workshops included.

Here at Otis Street Arts Project, we’re interested in elevating our conversations about art. We feel that group studios and areas of artist density provide fertile ground for growth and development. While this is an important part of our daily interaction as artists, we also feel that Curators, Critics, Art Writers, and other Arts Professionals bring an amazing amount of insight for an Artist. With this in mind, we are hosting a series we call The Critique. 

We will show the work of 3 artists and have an invited arts professional guide us through talking about the work. Our aim is to intelligently discuss the work, pointing out strengths and flaws in the pieces, and providing a suggested guidance for the future.

Each session will be led by a different professional and will, accordingly, be slightly different. 

We would like to invite everyone that is interested in hearing this conversation about specific works of art to sit in on The Critique The conversation is meant to be critical, and constructive. We aim to discuss what works, what doesn’t work, and to lead the artist toward possible resolutions or developments.
