In conjunction with our current exhibit, "Body Language", we would like to invite you to join us for a healing session with Sarah Massey.
Together, we can pivot from fear and despair to strength and positivie power. This 2-hour, interactive workshop aims to support the social justice movement to resist new threats and to create the loving, just community we envision.
The election and the results are unprecedented. I don't need to spell out all that went wrong and what could go wrong. You know it. And, it hurts.
I posit a valuable first step includes developing resiliency within ourselves -- you are strong, you are brave, and you are a leader. You can foster internal resources to bounce back from challenges.
What do we do? How can we assist anyone when our mind is full of anger, when depressed, or overwhelmed?
Let’s breath, let’s get creative, let’s create personal, powerful resiliency so we have the strength to serve.
In this 2-hour, interactive workshop, we will meditate, examine anger and fear, learn about personal resiliency, and create personal plans for developing positivity.

FundRaiser for Alma Selimovic's Berlin Residency

Otis Street Art Project Studio would like to invite you to fundraising event for Alma Selimovic.
Alma is going to Berlin for a two-month residency at the INSTITUTE FÜR ALLES MÖGLICHE in Berlin, Germany. The focus of the residency will be to create digital drawings of people from Eastern Europe who are queer, trans and/or gender neutral. Alma’s drawings will be exhibited in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The final installation, "In Transition" will be exhibited in the USA and potentially a few other locations.
About the Fundraiser:
This event will feature a presentation by Alma, a screening of a documentary about her activist work in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Queer Sarajevo Festival: Documentary), and an exhibit and silent auction of her sculptural work and smaller works by her sister company RozArt.
All proceeds from the sales will go toward “In Transition” project. Alma would like to compensate travel and time of all of her models. Other expenses are included, such as the creation of a working team that will assist Alma with logistics, audio translations and photography. This project will geographically span Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, in order to reach more people.

Here at Otis Street Arts Project, we’re interested in elevating our conversations about art. We feel that group studios and areas of artist density provide fertile ground for growth and development. While this is an important part of our daily interaction as artists, we also feel that Curators, Critics, Art Writers, and other Arts Professionals bring an amazing amount of insight for an Artist. With this in mind, we host an ongoing series we call The Critique.We would like to invite everyone that is interested in hearing this conversation about specific works of art to sit in on The Critique. The conversation is meant to be critical, and constructive. We aim to discuss what works, what doesn’t work, and to lead the artist toward possible resolutions or developments.
Our Guest Critic will be Jayme McLellan
Jayme McLellan is a curator, gallery director, educator, and artist. McLellan has a twenty-year history of curating exhibitions and working with artists and art spaces including curating over one hundred exhibitions at the gallery she created and directs, Civilian Art Projects. McLellan has curated and managed independent projects and exhibitions at galleries, museums, and non-profit art spaces in the U.S. and Europe and has led classes on curatorial practice and professional practice for visual artists for eight years. She is presently adjunct faculty at Georgetown University in the Art & Art History Department. She has published essays and articles about artists, and is a practicing visual artist working in photography and video. An essay about her career will be included in “Living & Sustaining a Creative Life: Artist as Culture Producer,” edited by Sharon Louden, published in March 2017. Prior to creating Civilian Art Projects, McLellan co-founded Transformer, a non-profit arts organization in Washington, DC, and she "cut her teeth" at DC Arts Center as a fundraiser. It is at DCAC where she realized her first independent curatorial projects.

The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies
What Can Tarot Cards Teach Us About Climate Change?
Contemporary art piece asks participants to contemplate nature and the future of the planet
It can be hard to face a future we fear. Divination has been used by cultures throughout the world to help people navigate dif cult futures. Artist James Leonard has adapted Tarot cards to help others process what he calls “overwhelming climate anxiety.” This summer he’s traveling the country, making one-day stops to give climate change divinatory readings inside a special, hand- sewn tent.
On Tuesday July 19th, Leonard will be inside his tent at Otis Street Arts Project, offering free, private climate change readings. Everyone is invited. Readings last approximately 15 minutes each and are given on a first-come, first-served basis.
Leonard calls his artwork The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies.
From the outside, the tent looks like a cross
between a post-apocalyptic wigwam and a children’s blanket fort. The rainbow interior is made out of brightly colored recycled clothing. It required over 500 hours of hand sewing to complete. Detailed tea-colored ink paintings of different plant and animal species—each reportedly affected by climate change are pinned to the outside.
Leonard explains, “A lot of thought has gone into The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies. I wanted to create a space for contemplation, where participants can slow down, articulate questions and find clarity. Climate change is a universal concern. Art is the perfect place for expressing and evaluating concern.”
James Leonard is an internationally exhibited artist. He recently nished a 2016 artist residency at MASS MoCA. In 2015, he was artist-in-residence at the Boston Center for the Arts. When not on the road, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Flow amidst art from Otis Street Art Projects resident artists, and spend time exploring their creative works after class.

Here at Otis Street Arts Project, we’re interested in elevating our conversations about art. We feel that group studios and areas of artist density provide fertile ground for growth and development. While this is an important part of our daily interaction as artists, we also feel that Curators, Critics, Art Writers, and other Arts Professionals bring an amazing amount of insight for an Artist. With this in mind, we are announcing our series The Critique.

We will show the work of 4 artists and have an invited arts professional guide us through talking about the work. Our aim is to intelligently discuss the work, pointing out strengths and flaws in the pieces, and providing a suggested guidance for the future.
Each session will be led by a different professional and will accordingly be slightly different.
Our first session will be led by F. Lennox Campello.
An award winning artist, a published regional art critic, art exhibitions curator, author and book reviewer, and gallerist are some of the adjectives used to describe F. Lennox Campello. You may have read his widely popular blog DC Art News, or see his book 100 Washington, DC Artists, or viewed his wonderful and innovative artwork. Certainly most DC area artists have heard of or know Lenny Campello. We’re proud to have Mr. Campello as our special Art Critic for the evening.
Our first round of artists to have their work talked about are
