The artists of Maryland’s Gateway Arts District present the 14th iteration of the Spring Open Studios on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 12-5 p.m. The self-guided tour takes place in the Gateway Arts District along Route 1 in Prince George’s County, MD in the towns of Mount Rainier, North Brentwood, Brentwood and Hyattsville. The inaugural opening celebration of the new Lab Gallery at the Brentwood Arts Exchange in the Gateway Art Center—located at 3901 Rhode Island Ave, Brentwood, MD 20722—will take place after the open studios from 5-8 p.m.

The Gateway Arts District is the DC metro area’s largest arts district and houses internationally renowned galleries, studios, workshops and art spaces. Visitors have the opportunity to directly interact with artists in their studios and to connect with their artistic process.

On Saturday, May 12, studios, art organizations, and galleries throughout the Gateway Arts District will open their doors to the public. The event is free and open to people of all ages. Over 100 individual artists participate in the event making the 2018 Spring Open Studios the region’s most prominent visual arts event. Audiences can attend art openings, glass-blowing demonstrations or select artwork in an artist’s studio. This artist-led event presents a once-a-year opportunity to connect with the region’s most important and economically vital centers of art production.

A free shuttle bus will make stops from Artists by the Tracks in Mount Rainier to Pyramid Atlantic in Hyattsville.

Between studios and gallery stops, the Gateway Arts Districts offers several new food and drink options along Route 1 including the recently opened Pizzeria Paradiso in Hyattsville, known for its outstanding pizza and wide selection of craft beers. Pizzeria Paradiso will host a beer festival on May 12 from 12-5 p.m.

A collaborative art project including Ellyn Weiss, Sondra Arkin and Veronica Szalus

Vector-borne diseases, including malaria, dengue and zika, among others, are transmitted by small organisms (vectors) such as mosquitoes, eas or ticks that carry pathogens from animals to humans, person to person and place to place. As the earth warms and climate changes, the environment conducive to the spread of these diseases expands, exposing vulnerable new populations that lack any protection to these pathogens. In these circumstances, vector-borne diseases can spread rapidly and in unexpected ways, posing severe challenges

to national governments, international health systems and the world’s population. We see this today with the outbreak of zika. The amount of greenhouse gases already in the environment ensures that the phenomenon will only increase for at least the medium-term future regardless of the success of efforts to curtail emissions of CO2.

Artists
Ellyn Weiss, Sondra Arkin and Veronica Szalus have been exhibiting their work locally and nationally for over 20 years; all have signi cant experience creating installation art, as well as more traditional wall-hung work. Weiss and Arkin, for example, collaborated on a gallery- lling installation at the Gateway Arts Center entitled “Big Ideas”, concerned with the evolution of the area now known as the Gateway Arts District. Weiss collabo- rated on a climate change-related installation created at the American Association for the Advancement of Sci- ence and at the McLean Project for the Arts, called “Voyage of Discovery”, which evoked a trip to the melting polar regions. Szalus has created numerous installations, often using fragile and ethereal materials to address the impact of the environment upon them and allow the viewer to become a witness to temporary conditions that frame our lives.

The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies

What Can Tarot Cards Teach Us About Climate Change?

Contemporary art piece asks participants to contemplate nature and the future of the planet

It can be hard to face a future we fear. Divination has been used by cultures throughout the world to help people navigate dif cult futures. Artist James Leonard has adapted Tarot cards to help others process what he calls “overwhelming climate anxiety.” This summer he’s traveling the country, making one-day stops to give climate change divinatory readings inside a special, hand- sewn tent.

On Tuesday July 19th, Leonard will be inside his tent at Otis Street Arts Project, offering free, private climate change readings. Everyone is invited. Readings last approximately 15 minutes each and are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Leonard calls his artwork The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies.

From the outside, the tent looks like a cross
between a post-apocalyptic wigwam and a children’s blanket fort. The rainbow interior is made out of brightly colored recycled clothing. It required over 500 hours of hand sewing to complete. Detailed tea-colored ink paintings of different plant and animal species—each reportedly affected by climate change are pinned to the outside.

Leonard explains, “A lot of thought has gone into The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies. I wanted to create a space for contemplation, where participants can slow down, articulate questions and find clarity. Climate change is a universal concern. Art is the perfect place for expressing and evaluating concern.”

James Leonard is an internationally exhibited artist. He recently nished a 2016 artist residency at MASS MoCA. In 2015, he was artist-in-residence at the Boston Center for the Arts. When not on the road, he lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Gateway Community Development Corporation welcomes you to the 12th Annual Gateway Open Studio Tour in the Prince George's County Gateway Arts District, home to one of the DC metro area's most innovative and creative artist communities. On Saturday, May 14th, 2016, from 12-5 p.m., Gateway Arts District artists, studios and galleries will open their doors to the public.   Two of our Artists will be demonstrating aspects of their studio process 1:00 Jenna North will be doing a demo of painting on water. 2:00 Hebron Chism will be showing his carving techniques. In addition to being able to see the work of our resident artists, we'll have the fantastic Plastic Sky playing her lyrical ambient dreamscape music for you. From 5-8pm, the Gateway Arts Center will host an After Party and an Opening Reception at the 39th Street Gallery. The Critique- Part III

It's been so much fun, we're doing it again!

Please join us as we host The Critique!

We’re interested in elevating our conversations about art. We feel that group studios and areas of artist density provide fertile ground for interaction, conversation, growth and development. While this is an important part of our daily interaction as artists, we also feel that Curators, Critics, Gallarists, Collectors, Art Writers, and other Arts Professionals bring an amazing amount of insight for an Artist. With the our first two sessions of The Critique having received a great amount of interest and positive feedback, we’re going to keep it up!

Please join us for the 3rd session of The Critique

We will show the work of 3 artists and have an invited arts professional guide us through talking about the work. Our aim is to intelligently discuss the work, pointing out strengths and flaws in the pieces, and providing a suggested guidance for the future.

Each session will be led by a different professional and will accordingly be slightly different.
